Old Park Meadow, Chelmsford, Essex

Regional and Overall Winner
in
The People's Awards for the Best Natural Burial Ground 2019 and 2020
and runner up in 2022, 2023 and 2024

Located in a tranquil setting in the heart of Essex, between Chelmsford and Great Dunmow, our 34-acre site consists of a variety of grasses, trees, and wildflower meadows, creating the perfect space for natural or green burials. Whether it is in our young Bluebell Wood, among the flowers in our Spring Corner, near Water’s View or in our Wildflower Meadow.

We enable families to have the opportunity to say goodbye their own way. Whether you are religious or not, would prefer a burial or ash interment with or without a service, a celebration of life or would like a catered wake afterwards, Old Park Meadow is open to any request. Everything can be completely personalised and reserving a plot in advance is also possible.

We are doing everything we can to make sure that the environment we are creating is in keeping with local flora and fauna. In consulting extensively with the Essex Wildlife Trust, the Woodland Trust, and the RSPB we want to provide an area that is both amenable to local wildlife and actively supports it. Over the years, we have planted more than 3,500 trees, nurtured 500 meters of native hedgerow, and sowed the entire 34-acres with a blend of grass and wildflower meadows. This conscious effort has led to the creation of a thriving nature reserve, where every aspect of our flora and fauna plays a pivotal role in bolstering the local ecosystem and providing a refuge for wildlife.

We hope that continuing in this manner will lead to a sustainable eco-system that can thrive here for generations, ensuring a profound environmental legacy for anyone buried or interred here.

At Old Park Meadow, we treat every passing with the delicate care and attention it deserves. Losing a loved one can be difficult, we take it upon ourselves to make sure that everything you need is provided for, and you can be sure that every ceremony will be of the highest standard. We understand that nothing should be left to chance on such an important day, so our experienced staff will always be on hand to guide you through the process.

For us, ensuring everyone can choose a sustainable and beautiful burial is more important than anything, regardless of where you come from. Unlike some other cemeteries we do not charge anything extra if you do not reside in the local area.

We have a state-of-the-art music, webcast, and visual tribute system, allowing you to tailor the service that you would like.

If you would like to stay for the wake of your loved one at our Lodge, we have a selection of menus for you to choose from such as Afternoon Teas, Finger Buffets or perhaps you have a favourite dish. If you have any dietary requirements, such as gluten free, vegetarian or vegan, this can also be catered for too.

While of course our funerals will always take priority, we want to take the opportunity to make Old Park Lodge available for a range of other activities for the community. The main hall is an ideal location for yoga classes, choir practices or art sessions, as it provides a peaceful escape from the outside world. We also hold fundraising events for Farleigh Hospice, St Clare Hospice, the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance and the Essex Wildlife Trust.

We hold open Coffee Mornings here every Wednesday between 10am and 12 noon, so why not take the opportunity to pop in and see what we are all about and have a chat. Also, every Wednesday, our gardening club meet between 9am and 12 noon and all are welcome to join in for a spot of gardening with our other volunteers.

We have several Memorial Options available here at Old Park Meadow, wooden grave markers, engraved leaves on our copper tree, our book of remembrance, engraved slate plaques, memorial plaques for benches, memorial trees, and wildlife boxes.

Opening Hours: Visitors to Old Park Meadow are welcome any time as there is access via the pedestrian gate if the office and main car park are closed. The office is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
